Pole Vaulter Maness Receives Patriot League Accolade

Jiles Maness

Dec. 3, 2012

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Freshman pole vaulter Jiles Maness has been named the Patriot League M-F Athletic Men's Track and Field Rookie of the Week, the league office announced today. Maness wins the league's first rookie of the week honor of the 2012-13 season.

Maness won the pole vault at the 13-team season-opening Navy Invitational on Saturday with a clear of 16-2¾ (4.95m). Maness' clear matched Navy's season-best mark from the 2011-12 indoor season and also qualified him for the IC4A Championship in what was his collegiate debut.

The 6-foot-4 Maness led a Navy pole vault contingent that swept spots one through six in the event at the non-scored meet. Sophomore Mark Vetere also cleared an IC4A-qualiying height of 15-9 (4.80m) to place second.

Navy has won the pole vault at each of the past two Patriot League Indoor Championships. Junior Ryan Kochert won the event as a freshman in 2011 and Vetere won in 2012.

Maness earned all-state honors in the pole vault while at Robert B. Glenn High School in Winston Salem, N.C.

Navy will be off until January 6 when the team competes at Princeton in a dual meet.
