Water Polo Goes a Perfect 3-0 to Start the 2013 Season

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy water polo team outscored three opponents, 57-24, to begin the 2013 season unbeaten on Saturday's action of the Navy Open at Lejeune Hall "A" in Annapolis.

The Midshipmen are 3-0 on the season after besting Penn State Behrend (27-3), Iona (16-9), Diablo Valley College (14-12) on Saturday.

"There was a lot of positives than negatives in the season openers," said head coach Mike Schofield. "We found out that our top group did what they were suppose to do. We now look to see who fits where on our bench moving forward."

Navy's first game was a 27-3 win over Penn State Behrend on Saturday afternoon. The Midshipmen jumped out to a 7-0 lead after one quarter, before stretching the margin to 19-2 at intermission.

Sean McDonald, Patrick Geer and Will Weggeland led Navy with three goals. Seventeen different players scored goals for the Midshipmen. The Mids used all seven goalies on the roster in the contest.

The Midshipmen then toppled Iona College, 16-9, in game two of Navy's action. Weggeland paced Navy with four goals. His four-goal performance was a career-best.. Thomas Petersen, P.J. Taylor and Thomas Allen chipped in with two goals apiece.

In game three, the Midshipmen battled with Diablo Valley College all the way to the final minute, but came out with a 14-12 win. Navy held an 8-4 lead going into the second half. Dowzicky and Weggeland led the charge with three goals each. The Midshipmen added three more goals in the third to extend their lead to seven, 11-4.

However, Diablo Valley came charging back in the second half, going on a 7-3 run when the Mids went to their bench. But Navy held in the fourth quarter to stay perfect on Saturday. Robert Sutherland paced his squad with three helpers.

Navy hosts MAB, Fordham, and Mt. San Antonio on Sunday afternoon at 8:20 AM, 9:30 AM and 1 PM in Lejeune Hall "A".
