ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Continuing their success from Saturday, Navy water polo added two more wins on Sunday, Sept. 8 to stay perfect to begin the 2013 season. The Midshipmen tied their most goals in a single contest with 28 over Mount San Antonio in their final game of the day.
"We showed a lot of improvement in our second day of competition in the 2013 season," said head coach Mike Schofield. "We shot ourselves in the foot against Fordham too many times, but we found a way to win in that contest."
Navy began Sunday with an exhibition win over MAB club team, 17-9. The Mids had seven different goal scorers, including a five-goal performance from Taylor Setness.
With little time to rest, Navy was back into the pool to face a tough Fordham squad. The Midshipmen were in control in the first half, scoring eight goals and holding the Rams to four. Down four heading into the third quarter, Fordham tallied three goals to cut the deficit, 11-7. Robert Sutherland's final goal, early in the fourth quarter, proved to be the game-winner. Sutherland paced the squad with three goals and teammate Will Weggeland added with four assists. Goalkeeper Garrett Sabesky played the full game, tallying 11 blocks.
In the final game of the day Navy, the Midshipmen could do no wrong on offense versus Mt. San Antonio. The Mids began the game on a 9-0 run before finishing the half 11-3. Navy finished with 28 goals, which tied for the most goals in a single contest. Thomas Allen led the Mids with four goals and teammates Scotty Snowden, David Huber and Evan Staresinic chipped in with three helpers each.
Navy will have its hands full next weekend when they travel to Providence, R.I. The Midshipmen will play the likes of Havard, Brown, Pacific and St. Francis (Brooklyn) amongst other squads.
