PRINCETON, N.J. – Faced with a demanding schedule of competition over the weekend, the Navy water polo team made sure it got off to a positive start with a 14-6 victory over Iona at the Princeton Invitational on Friday evening.
In the first of eight games in two separate tournaments this weekend, the Mids jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead over the Gaels as senior Sean McDonald (Lansdale, Pa.) and sophomore Lucas MacLellan (Yorba Linda, Calif.) netted back-to-back goals in the first quarter.
After Iona took the lead over Navy at 3-2, the Mids locked down and would close out the quarter with a 6-1 goal run. A hat trick by sophomore Carpenter Warren (Baltimore, Md.), as well as two goals from his classmate Robert Sutherland (Denton, Texas) and another by McDonald highlighted Navy’s offense during the streak.
With the score 8-4, each team would net a pair of goals in the second quarter with Sutherland registering both of the Mids’ points.
Navy would hold Iona without a goal for the remainder of the game and close the scoring at 14-6 courtesy of four goals in the third quarter, including three by senior Andrew Lacosse (Owings, Md.) and one by sophomore Carl Dowzicky (Collegeville, Pa.).
The Mids will head into split-squad tournament action tomorrow with half of the team staying at Princeton for a matchup versus Harvard, while the other half will compete at the Bruno Fall Invitational at Brown University in Providence, R.I. The latter team will face off versus Brown, Cal Lutheran and Connecticut College on Saturday.
