ANNAPOLIS, Md. -
The 17th-ranked Navy water polo team opened CWPA Southern Division play with a pair of wins on Saturday at Macdonough Hall in Annapolis. The Mids began the day by defeating Bucknell, 11-6, and then downed No. 15 Princeton, 13-10, later in the nightcap. With the two victories, Navy remains undefeated at 12-0 on the season.
"I'm proud of our team. Last year, we played these same two teams at home and went 0-2," said Navy head coach Mike Schofield. "So, it was a much better result today. We still have a lot of room for improvement, but we came to play today."
Goals from Jesse Walker, Paul Pedrotty and Sean McDonald helped Navy jump out to a 3-0 lead early in the first quarter of the matinee game against Bucknell. The Bison pulled to within one at 4-3 in the second frame, but Midshipman tallies from McDonald and Erich Schwamb in the final minute of the half bumped Navy's lead to 6-3.
The Mids methodically extended their lead in the third quarter, outscoring the Bison, 4-1. Pedrotty picked up one more goal in the frame before tallying another at the start of the fourth quarter, helping Navy to an 11-6 win.
Both Pedrotty and Schwamb finished with three goals in the win over Bucknell. Pedrotty registered a game-high three assists as well.
Pedrotty got off to a quick start in Saturday's nightcap against the Tigers as he found the back of the net twice in a :34 span of the first quarter to give the Mids a 3-1 lead. The two teams then traded goals and it was 4-2 after one quarter of play.
The Navy attack continued in the second quarter as the Midshipmen struck four more times to claim an 8-3 lead at the half. Pedrotty started and ended the frame with a goal while Archie Warren
and Thomas Patterson
The Tigers scored twice in the first 2:24 of the third quarter to pull within three, but again with the help of two more goals from Pedrotty the Mids held Princeton from getting any closer. Cort Jones also scored in the frame as Navy took an 11-6 lead into the fourth quarter.
Two Princeton goals in the first 1:56 of the fourth quarter cut into the Navy lead. Navy's Patt Seipp made it 12-8 with 4:32 to play, but Princeton rallied again by scoring twice more to trim Navy's advantage to just two, 12-10, with just over one minute to play. However, the Mids held on and Schwamb added his second goal of the game with :07 remaining to seal the 13-10 victory.
With six goals against the defending Eastern champ Tigers, Pedrotty finished the day with a total of nine to lead the Navy offense.
Navy will look to remain undefeated next weekend when it travels to California for five games. The Mids' west-coast trip will begin Thursday when they take on Long Beach State.
