LONG BEACH, Calif. -- The No. 9-ranked Long Beach State water polo team led essentially the entire game and shut out Navy in the fourth quarter to thwart any chance of a comeback as the 49ers toppled the Midshipmen, 15-7, late Thursday night in Long Beach.
The loss ended Navy's season-opening 12-game winning streak and dropped the Midshipmen to 12-1, while Long Beach State improved to 10-1 overall.
Navy trailed 4-2 after one quarter, but was able to trim the lead to 4-3 midway through the second quarter on a Sean McDonald tally with 4:04 left before halftime. However, the 49ers closed the half on a 3-1 spurt to grab a 7-4 halftime advantage.
After Long Beach State pushed the lead to four goals three times, all three times the Midshipmen were able to counter with goals of their own to cut the margin back to three goals, the last time being at 10-7 on a Thomas Patterson goal with 3:03 left in the third quarter. However, Long Beach State scored a pair of goals in a 25-second span late in the stanza to grab a 12-7 cushion, then tallied three more in the fourth period for the 15-7 margin. The 49ers outscored Navy, 5-0, over the last nine-plus minutes of the game.
Navy will return to action tonight when it faces Whittier and La Verne, beginning at 3:00 PM (ET) today at Whittier College.
