Water Polo Falls Twice To Top 15 Ranked Opposition On Friday
Sept. 27, 2013
IRVINE and LA JOLLA, Calif. - The Navy water polo team dropped a pair of non-conference matches on Friday in California as the Mids fell 16-10 to #11 Concordia and 11-9 to #14 UC San Diego.
In his first matches back since the season-opening Navy Open, junior Thomas Patterson (Orange, Calif.) netted eight total goals, including seven versus Concordia in the day’s first contest. Sophomore Carpenter Warren (Baltimore, Md.) aided Patterson and Navy’s offense with three goals on the day.
Facing off with the 11th ranked Eagles of Concordia, the Mids ran into an offensive buzzsaw as the hosts jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the first quarter. Patterson scored two of Navy’s three goals with tallies at 5:09 and 3:03; senior Sean McDonald (Lansdale, Pa.) notched the team’s third goal.
In an even second quarter both squads scored two goals as Warren and Patterson found the back of the net for the Mids to send the game into the halftime break at 10-5.
After two Eagle goals put Navy down 12-5 with 6:38 remaining in the third quarter, the Mids and Patterson fought back with four individual goals as part of a 4-1 run to tighten the game up at 13-9.
Ahead 14-9 going into the fourth quarter, Concordia salted away the victory with a 2-1 advantage in goals over the final eight minutes. Warren registered his second goal of the game with a marker at 1:23.
Navy's prospects weren’t dampened going into its second game of the day after its initial setback as the Mids came out and went head-to-head with the 14th ranked Tritons of UC San Diego.
Behind goals by sophomore classmates Carl Dowzicky (Collegeville, Pa.) and Will Weggeland (Riverside, Calif.) and four saves by goalie Garrett Sabesky (So., Lakeside, Calif.) the Mids finished the first quarter up 2-1.
Navy would extend its one-goal lead to a 6-4 margin by halftime on the strength of scores by Patterson, Dowzicky, McDonald and Warren.
The momentum that the Mids had built up in the first half would be overcome quickly with a Triton onslaught in the third quarter. In a 6-0 run from 4:57 to 0:51, Navy saw its two-goal lead flipped into a four-goal deficit at 10-6.
Scotty Snowden (Sr., Altadena, Calif.) scored with 36 seconds remaining in the period to make it 10-7 heading into the final quarter of play.
After a Robert Sutherland (So., Denton, Texas) goal tightened the margin to 10-8 with 3:00 left in regulation the upset-minded Mids were unfortunately only able to trade goals down the stretch and conclude the game at 11-9 in favor of UC San Diego.
Both teams had strong goaltending as Sabesky made 10 total saves in the game, while UCSD’s Cameron Ravenbach turned aside 12 Midshipmen shots.
Navy (8-11) will continue its California game action on Saturday with a matchup versus #6 UC Santa Barbara. The Mids and Gauchos face off at 5:00 p.m. PST / 8:00 p.m. EST.
