LA JOLLA, Calif. - The Navy water polo team fell short in its upset bid of the 6th ranked UC Santa Barbara Gauchos on Saturday night as the Mids lost 16-7. Senior Andrew Lacosse (Owings, Md.) led the Mids on Saturday with two goals.
Unfazed by playing their third top 15 ranked opponent in two days, the Mids went goal-for-goal with the Gauchos over the opening quarter of play. Will Weggeland (So., Riverside, Calif.), Thomas Patterson (Jr., Orange, Calif.) and Lacosse all scored for Navy, who finished the quarter tied 3-3.
UCSB broke away from the Mids in the second period by netting three unanswered goals.
Coming out in the third quarter up 6-3, UCSB continued its goal streak with four more unanswered tallies to put Navy in a 10-3 deficit. Lacosse and Carpenter Warren (So., Baltimore, Md.) got the Mids back in the scoring column with goals at 5:10 and 3:00.
The fourth quarter proved to be much closer as the teams traded goals to conclude the contest with a 16-7 final score. Matt Newby (Jr., Los Angeles, Calif.) and Brendan Metcalf (Fr., Frisco, Texas) registered goals for the Mids in the final period.
After the match, coach Mladen Stanicic remarked that “as we anticipated, the West Coast schedule is proving very tough. Santa Barbara is deservedly the number six program in the nation. We played them fairly evenly in the first half, but then they peeled away with a couple of counter attacks. Our guys are looking better and better, but the competition is getting harder. I’m looking forward to a couple of weeks of training to smooth out some kinks.”
Navy (8-12) will complete its West Coast road trip on Sunday with a matchup versus Cerritos College at 8:00 a.m. PST / 11:00 a.m. EST.
