Jack Finch finished with seven points on Sunday versus Cerritos
Sept. 29, 2013
DOWNEY, Calif. - The Navy water polo team wrapped up its California road trip with an emphatic 16-9 win over Cerritos College on Sunday morning. After dropping three hard-fought contests versus ranked opposition on Friday and Saturday, the Mids broke through Sunday and translated that same effort into a victory versus the host Falcons.
Jack Finch (Jr., San Mateo, Calif.) and Carl Dowzicky (So., Collegeville, Pa.) led the Mids offensively with four goals each; sophomore Robert Sutherland (Denton, Texas) also netted a hat trick to aid Navy's offense. On defense, sophomore Garrett Sabesky (Lakeside, Calif.) made 15 saves in goal.
The Falcons came out and put the Mids in an initial 2-1 hole after the first quarter.
Navy responded with a stronger second quarter and took a 6-5 lead into the halftime break after netting five goals on Cerritos.
A good mixture of offense and defense was the story of the third quarter as the Mids tallied four goals and held the Falcons to just one score.
In the final period, Navy sealed up the victory with a 6-3 goal differential to earn the 16-9 win.
Along with his four goals, Finch added three assists to lead Navy with seven points in the contest.
Outside of Finch, Dowzicky and Sutherland, who accounted for 11 goals, Patrick Geer (Jr., Coronado, Calif.) added two goals, while P.J. Taylor (Jr., Dallas, Texas), Lucas MacLellan (So., Yorba Linda, Calif.) and Will Weggeland (So., Riverside, Calif.) registered single scores.
Post-game, Mladen Stanicic remarked his pleasure with his team and the victory. "I'm very pleased with the result today, Cerritos was a very respectable opponent. They kept coming at us for the first two quarters and made another hard push in the fourth, but our press wore them down. Jack Finch had a great defensive game for us that consequentially translated into an impressive offensive output."
The Mids (9-12) will step aside from competition next weekend as they turn their focus back to CWPA league play. Navy's next games will be on Saturday, Oct. 12 with a pair of CWPA contests at Bucknell and Princeton.
