PRINCETON, N.J. -- Jack Finch and Will Weggeland scored overtime goals and the No. 14-ranked Navy water polo team held off a Princeton rally to top the Tigers, 14-13, in overtime on Saturday.
The win moves Navy's record to 18-2 overall and 4-1 in the CWPA Southern Division league standings. Princeton falls to 9-9 overall and 3-2 in the same standings.
For the second straight game, Navy's second unit gave the Midshipmen a spark. The Midshipmen held a three-goal lead late before Princeton answered with three straight goals to tie the game and send the contest into overtime.
However, Finch and Weggeland scored 37 seconds apart in overtime and Navy held on for the thrilling one-goal victory.
"We escaped today and our second unit once again saved us. We were in control late in the third quarter and had three individual lapses on defense and gave up three goals which allowed them to tie the game," said Navy head coach Mike Schofield. "We fought our way back and regrouped and got a big lift by our second unit. They gave us a really good lift again."
The two teams were tied at 4-4 after one quarter with Navy holding a 6-5 advantage at halftime. Navy led 9-8 after three quarters then took a 12-9 lead midway through the fourth quarter before Princeton rallied to tie the game.
Pat Seipp led Navy with three goals while Cort Jones, Paul Pedrotty, Erich Schwamb and Jesse Walker scored twice. Tyler Barker had eight saves in the second half and overtime while Anthony Gutierrez stopped two shots in the first half.
Navy will face Bucknell tonight at 7:30 PM in Lewisburg, Pa.
