LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The 14th-ranked Navy water polo team outscored Bucknell, 6-1, in the fourth quarter to break open a close game and defeat the Bison, 17-11, on Saturday night. The win moves Navy's record to 18-2 overall and 5-1 in the CWPA Southern Division standings.
"We will have a happy bus ride home tonight and we're happy to pull out that win. It was a game that we could lose midway in the third quarter, but we steadied the ship and finished strong," said Navy head coach Mike Schofield. "We made a little run at the end of the third quarter and start of the fourth quarter. It was a good team effort. We still have major work to do in goaltending and in our defensive mindset. But this win puts us in a good position for the final two league games."
Navy led 3-2 after one quarter but was tied with the Bison, 6-6, at halftime. The Midshipmen fell behind twice in the third quarter, but went on a three-goal run in the third quarter to grab a 10-8 lead before settling in for an 11-10 advantage after three quarters.
Bucknell would get to within one goal at 12-11 in the fourth quarter, but the Midshipmen scored the last five goals of the game for the 17-11 victory.
Thomas Patterson led Navy with four goals, while Paul Pedrotty and Cort Jones each had three tallies. Tyler Barker stopped six shots in goal for the Midshipmen.
Navy will be off next weekend before hosting Johns Hopkins and George Washington on Saturday, Oct. 27, at Macdonough Hall in Annapolis.
