ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The No. 14-ranked Navy water polo team swept two opponents on Saturday to finish the regular season with a 7-1 league record and earn the CWPA Southern Division crown. Navy topped George Washington, 12-7, before cruising past Johns Hopkins, 12-5, in Annapolis.
The wins move Navy's record to 21-2 overall and the Mids were two games clear of Princeton in the CWPA Southern Division race. Navy needed just one win today to earn the title, but earned the sweep with a pair of strong defensive efforts.
In the day's first game, a 12-7 decision over George Washington, the Midshipmen methodically pulled away from the Colonials. Navy led 3-1 after one quarter and 4-3 at halftime. Navy then pulled away in the third quarter to lead 8-5 before settling in for a 12-7 victory.
Erich Schwamb, Tyler Thein and Archie Warren scored twice for Navy while six other players tallied one goal each. Paul Pedrotty added one goal and four assists in the contest. Tyler Barker stopped three shots while allowing seven goals in the nets.
In the second game, Navy was all over Johns Hopkins from the outset, leading 4-1 after one quarter and 8-1 at halftime. The Midshipmen held a 9-2 lead after three quarters in avenging one of their two losses on the season.
Pedrotty and Schwamb scored three goals each, while Cort Jones added a pair of netters. Pedrotty would dish out three assists for an 11-point day, giving him 115 points on the season to rank fourth on the Navy single-season points scored list.
Anthony Gutierrez stopped 10 shots in goal for the Midshipmen.
Navy will be in action next weekend when it travels to Lewisburg, Pa., for the CWPA Southern Division Tournament. The Midshipmen will be the tournament's top seed and will look for their 14th division title in what will be their 20th Southern Division Tournament. The top four finishers will advance to the CWPA Eastern Championship on Nov. 16-18, in Princeton, N.J.
