LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The 14th-ranked Navy water polo team outscored Gannon, 11-0, in the first half and cruised home in a 14-4 victory in the opening game of the CWPA Southern Division Tournament, held at Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pa.
The win moves Navy to 22-2 overall and more importantly, advances Navy to the CWPA Eastern Championships in two weeks. The top four finishers in the Southern Division Tournament advance to Easterns. Navy is guaranteed to finish in the top four following today's win.
"It was a good first game. Our frontline guys did some good things and when the younger guys came in, unfortunately they weren't ready for prime time," said Navy head coach Mike Schofield. "It was a good first half and nice to get those guys loose and ready to go for the rest of the tournament."
Navy was all over Gannon from the start, leading 7-0 after one quarter and 11-0 at halftime. Navy led 12-1 after three quarters before being outscored in the fourth quarter, 3-2, for the final margin.
Archie Warren scored all three of his goals in the first half and added three assists for a six-point outing. Sean McDonald added two goals, while Erich Schwamb and Will Weggeland added two assists. Nine other players tallied one goal each.
All seven goalkeepers saw action in the contest, with Anthony Gutierrez and Eugene Chang each stopping three shots.
Navy advances to the semifinals against Bucknell, which was a 13-12 overtime winner against George Washington on Friday. The game will start on Saturday at 4:15 PM.
