ANNAPOLIS, Md.  – The Navy water polo team advanced to the quarterfinals of the CWPA Southern Division Championship on Friday night with a dominant 15-3 victory over the 12th-seeded Penn State Behrend Lions at Lejeune Hall. The fifth-seeded Mids opened the game on a 14-0 run on their way to the win.

Junior Patrick Geer (Coronado, Calif.) led a complete team effort with a game-high three goals. In total, 12 Mids scored goals in the victory.

Navy opened the first quarter with eight unanswered goals, including four in the first 3:36 of play. Geer was the squad’s leading scorer in the period with all three of his goals netted within a 2:37 span.  Sophomore Garrett Sabesky (Lakeside, Calif.) started in goal and finished the period with two saves.

Up 8-0, the Mids increased their lead in the second quarter with five more unanswered goals. Senior Taylor Setness (Stockton, Calif.) had the goal of the period as he backed up his defender and in one move spun and ripped a shot past the PSU Behrend goalie. Navy scored its five goals from five different Midshipmen.

Navy extended the margin to 14 with a quick Corey Maier (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) score less than a minute into the third quarter. After having a 5-meter penalty shot rang off both goal posts and another penalty shot get denied by goalie Caleb Lintz (Mechanicsburg, Pa.), the Lions finally got on the scoreboard with 1:35 remaining in the period. A Jared Griffin (Arnold, Md.) 5-meter goal with five seconds left closed the quarter at 15-1.

PSU Behrend mounted a two-goal run in the fourth quarter to close the scoring at 15-3 mark.

“I’m happy with the win as tonight is the first step in our team controlling our postseason destiny,” said Navy head coach Mladen Stanicic. “It was good to see all of our healthy athletes get a chance to play and contribute to our success. Tomorrow will be very important for us as we take on a familiar opponent in Johns Hopkins.”

With the win, the Mids improve to 14-14 on the year and more importantly move into the quarterfinals of the CWPA Southern Division Championship on Saturday. Beginning at 1 p.m. at Lejeune Hall, Navy will take on the fourth-seeded Johns Hopkins Blue Jays. The two squads have split their two earlier 2013 meetings with each winning at home by four-plus goals.

Depending on the outcome of the 1 p.m. contest, the Mids will either play in a 5 p.m. consolation bracket game or a 7:40 p.m. winner’s bracket game.
