March 26, 2013

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Highlighted by Jackson Hummeldorf's and Tyler Barker's 4.00 GPAs, the Navy water polo team placed eight student-athletes on the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-Acedemic teams. To be eligible for the squad, a student-athlete needs to have a 3.20 cumulative GPA through at least one semester. The group is then split into three teams; outstanding (3.71 - 4.00 GPA), superior (3.41 - 3.70 GPA) and excellent (3.20 - 3.40 GPA).

Hummeldorf (4.00; Ocean Engineering), Barker (4.00; Honors Systems Engineering) and Vikram Kanth (3.88; Computer Engineering) were all named to the Outstanding squad. Navy was the only school nationally to have two student-athletes achieve 4.00 cumulative GPAs. Hummeldorf has been named to the outstanding team in four consecutive years, while Barker and Kanth were honored on the squad for the second time.

Matt Newby (3.45; Information Technology) was Navy's lone representative on the superior squad, one year after being selected to the excellent squad.

Beau Bayless (3.28; Computer Science), Will Weggeland (3.24; Quantitative Economics), P.J. Taylor (3.22; Quantitative Economics) and Sean McDonald (3.20; American Politics and Law) were all named to the excellent squad. McDonald earns his second honor, while its the first academic accolade for Bayless, Weggeland and Taylor.

Navy finished the 2012 season with a 23-6 record, winning at least 20 games for the eighth straight year while earning the CWPA Southern Division regular-season crown.
