Water Polo Hosts Special Olympics Event

May 18, 2017

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy water polo team once again showcased its position as one of the leaders in community service as the Midshipmen hosted the aquatics portion of last month’s Special Olympics in Scott Natatorium.

As in previous years, the Navy men’s water polo team extended a helping hand for the Midshipmen Action Group. The Midshipman Action Group is the volunteer arm of the Brigade of Midshipmen. The Special Olympics events in the pool and on Ingram track on Saturday, April 29, were a huge success.

“For several years in a row, the Navy water polo team has been enjoying a great deal of satisfaction setting up Scott Natatorium for the Special Olympics that is hosted by the Naval Academy’s Midshipman Action Group,” said head coach Mladen Stanicic. “In preparation for the day’s competition, we move the bulkhead to 25 yards and stretch the swim lane lines to create a great venue for our friends in Special Olympics. We are happy to be in a position to contribute and I couldn't be prouder of the number of volunteers within our team and the effort that the team puts into this great event.”

The water polo team once again volunteered in high numbers to help host the aquatics events. Taylor Bernhardt, Trevor Clark, Nik Galvan, Gabe Gaspar, J.B. Lee, William Lowdon, Jack Orchard, Nate Reiff, Brandon Shields, Matt Skowronski, Kevin Volkov, Shepherd Warren, and Ronan Williams all volunteered to help make this event a success.

In addition to helping with the venue set up, Navy water polo players especially enjoy being partnered with and cheering on Special Olympians through every heat of swim competition.

“It was a true honor helping with the Special Olympics,” rising senior Matt Skowronski said of the annual event. “Seeing the excitement and joy these athletes had for an opportunity to compete and show off what they had been training so hard for is something truly amazing.”
