2012 Navy Water Polo Schedule

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Four home games against CWPA opponents and two home tournaments highlight the 2012 Navy water polo schedule, released today by head coach Mike Schofield. The Midshipmen will begin their 2012 season by hosting their annual Navy Open on Sept. 1-2 in Annapolis.

The Midshipmen typically play 6-8 games during the two-day Navy Open. However, games may be limited this year due to Lejeune Hall's ongoing renovations. The schedule for the Navy Open will be released at a later date.

Following a week off, Navy will host the Navy Invitational on Sept. 15-16. The teams and schedule for the event will be announced at a later date.

On Sept. 22, Navy concludes its season-opening homestand when it hosts Bucknell and Princeton (2:00 pm / 7:30 pm) for its first CWPA Southern Division contests of the season. Navy went 2-1 against Bucknell a year ago, defeating the Bison 11-5 in the CWPA Southern Division semifinals in the last meeting. Navy holds a 75-13 series advantage against Bucknell.

Princeton went 3-1 against Navy a year ago including a 10-7 decision in the CWPA Eastern Tournament finals. Navy still holds a 53-24 series lead over the Tigers, but the two teams have split 16 meetings (eight wins each) since the start of the 2008 campaign. Princeton won the Eastern title a year ago and finished third at the NCAA Championships. Navy has lost to Princeton in two of the last three Eastern Tournament finals.

The Midshipmen will then make their annual West Coast trip the following weekend (Sept. 27-29) for five games against California schools. Navy will face Long Beach State on Sept. 27, Whittier and La Verne on Sept. 28 and Pomona-Pitzer and Redlands on Sept. 29.

Navy closes out its conference slate over the next month, beginning with a pair of unique, challenging road trips. On Oct. 10, Navy will travel to Baltimore to face Johns Hopkins at 4:00 pm before traveling the Beltway to Washington, D.C., to battle on George Washington at 8:15 pm.

On Oct. 13, Navy will compete in a similar road trip as it travels to Princeton for a noon contest, before heading west to Lewisburg, Pa., for a 7:30 pm tilt with Bucknell.

The Midshipmen close out the season on Oct. 27 when they host George Washington (11:00 am) and Johns Hopkins (3:00 pm). Navy holds a 43-2 advantage with 33 straight wins over the Colonials, while leading the series with Johns Hopkins by a 44-1 margin with 13 straight victories.

The CWPA Southern Division Tournament will be played at Bucknell (Lewisburg, Pa.) on Nov. 2-4. The CWPA Eastern Championships are hosted by Princeton this year and will be contested on Nov. 16-18. The NCAA Tournament will be held Dec. 1-2 in Los Angeles, Calif.

Navy is looking for its its 10th Eastern title overall and its first NCAA Tournament berth since 2008.

The Midshipmen went 24-7 overall last year and reached the finals of the CWPA Eastern Tournament for the seventh straight season, matching a league record. Schofield returns two starters and 14 letterwinners, but must find a way to replace five of its top six scorers from last year's team.
