ANNAPOLIS, Md.-It is rare to see a head coach happy after a day that saw his team lose by scores of 11-3 and 16-7, but Navy head water polo coach Mike Schofield was very pleased with the way his Navy Aquatic Club performed on Friday in the first day of the U.S. Men's Nationals.

"It was great to have a chance to play four quarters against two great teams," said Schofield. "We did as well, if not better, than what I expected. We scored seven goals in the second game against the starting goalie for the United States in the last Olympics (Dan Hackett). Our kids learned a lot and this will do nothing but help them in the fall."

Navy lost its first game of the day, 11-3, to Golden Bear, which is a team made up of players who play or have played at the University of California, while in game two, the Mids lost to one of the tournament favorites, the New York Athletic Club A, by a score of 16-7.

Against Golden Bear, Joe Donahue scored two goals and Sean Foster scored one, while against New York Athletic Club A, Navy got three goals from Joe Donahue, two from Sean Foster and two from Kevin Permisohn.

"Cody Acuna played very well for us in goal," said Schofield. "He was a kid that wasn't even our starting goalie for us at the end of the year, but is someone who is going to be heard from next year. Joe Donahue was real impressive. For him to be able to score three times against Hackett is going to give him a world of confidence."
