Senior Sean McDonald and the Mids head to Bucknell and Princeton this Saturday

Oct. 10, 2013

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Navy water polo team will be back in action this Saturday with a pair of CWPA road matches at Bucknell and Princeton. After competing in California during the weekend of Sept. 27 through 29, the Mids were away from competition this past weekend.

Navy’s Saturday will consist of a game at Bucknell at 12 p.m. followed by a short trip to #12 Princeton for a 7:30 p.m. matchup to conclude the day.

Last Time Out

Playing their first full weekend under interim head coach Mladen Stanicic, the Mids took on a trio of top-15 ranked teams in Southern California in their last time in the pool. Play began on Sept. 27 with a pair of setbacks versus #11 Concordia and #14 UC San Diego. Against UCSD, the Mids held a 6-4 halftime lead before eventually falling by a narrow 11-9 margin. Navy finished its road trip with a loss to #6 UC Santa Barbara on Sept. 28 and a strong 16-9 win over Cerritos College on Sept. 29.

Individually, Thomas Patterson (Jr., Orange, Calif.) led the Mids with nine goals and two assists in three games, including a season-high seven-goal performance versus Concordia in his first game back since Sept. 8.

Sophomores Carl Dowzicky (Collegeville, Pa.) and Robert Sutherland (Denton, Texas) also compiled strong efforts for Navy with nine points each over the four games.

Junior Jack Finch (San Mateo, Calif.) concluded the trip by equaling Patterson’s single-game season-high points total with four goals and three assists versus Cerritos.

In goal, Garrett Sabesky (So., Lakeside, Calif.) showed strongly versus the ranked competition with 10-plus saves in two contests.

Scouting the Competition

Coming into this weekend with an 0-4 mark in CWPA Southern Division play, Mids will look to make up ground in the standings versus Bucknell and Princeton.

Bucknell (6-4, 1-3 CWPA South): After starting the season 6-1, the Bison come into Saturday’s meeting on a three-game losing streak.

Bucknell defeated Navy three weeks ago on Sept. 21 by an 8-6 score to earn its only league win of the season. A close game throughout, the Bison took a three-goal lead in the second quarter and would eventually hold on for the victory.

Offensively, Bucknell is led by a trio of productive scorers in Stefan Aleksic (17g-18a-35p), Julian Colina (21g-7a-28p) and Jack Else (24g-1a-25p). In goal, Keegan Williams has played in all 10 of Bucknell’s games and posted a .478 save percentage.

#12 Princeton (11-3, 4-0 CWPA South): The Tigers sit in first place in the CWPA Southern Division after an undefeated opening round of play. The 12th-ranked Tigers have lost just three times all season, with each defeat coming at the hands of top-10 ranked opposition.

On Sept. 21, Princeton beat Navy in Annapolis by a 12-7 score. After a low scoring first half saw the Mids down just 4-3, the second half was all Princeton as the Tigers expanded their lead to 8-4 in the third quarter on their way to the win.

Individually, Drew Hoffenberg leads the Tigers in both goals (36) and assists (18). He is one of four Princeton players with 20 or more goals as the Tigers average 10.4 goals per game as a team versus 9.2 against. Jovan Jeremic (27), Thomas Nelson (22) and Kayj Shannon (20) round out Princeton’s leading scorers. Alex Gow and Ben Dearborn have split time in goal with each athlete posting save percentages over .570.

Quoting the Coach

Interim Head Coach Stanicic on Saturday’s competition…

“It is a big day on Saturday for us. It is an opportunity to get our season back on track, but it will be no easy task at Kinney and DeNunzio pools. I’ve spent a lot of time watching video and I think with a great effort we can come away with victories.”
