Navy Water Polo Named Top Seed For Southern Division Tournament
Oct. 30, 2012
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The 14th-ranked Navy water polo team was named the top seed for this coming weekend's CWPA Southern Division Tournament to be played on the campus of Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pa., beginning on Friday.
Navy enters the tournament with a 21-2 overall record and winners of the CWPA Southern Division regular-season title with a 7-1 mark. The Midshipmen finished the regular season two games ahead of Princeton, which finished with a 5-3 league mark.
Navy has won five straight games entering the tournament and its 21-2 record is the program's best mark in school history by percentage (.913), while rivaling the 1983 squad that finished with a 26-3 (.897) record. Just four times in school history has Navy finished with a winning percentage of .800 or better, coming in 1982, 1983, 1984 and 2007.
Navy is searching for its second straight championship and its 14th tournament title in its 20th tournament appearance this weekend. The Midshipmen have dominated the Southern Division championship, posting a remarkable 58-6 (.906) record in the tournament with losses to just two teams (Princeton and Bucknell) during the competition. Since 2000, Navy has won seven tournament titles.
The Mids will open defense of their title on Friday at 5:45 PM against Gannon. A Navy win would put it against the winner of Bracket D, which consists of Bucknell (4th), George Washington (5th) and Washington & Jefferson (9th) in Saturday's semifinals. Should Navy advance past that contest, it would appear in the finals on Sunday against the winner of a game between Bracket B and Bracket C competitors. The finals are slated to begin at 2:00 PM on Sunday.
Navy is followed by Princeton (2nd), Johns Hopkins (3rd), Bucknell (4th), George Washington (5th), Mercyhurst (6th), Notre Dame, Ohio (7th), Gannon (8th), Washington & Jefferson (9th), Salem International (10th) and Penn State Behrend (11th) on the seed line.
The top four finishers in the CWPA Southern Division Tournament will advance to the Eastern Championship on Nov. 16-18, in Princeton, N.J. Navy needs to just win its opener against Gannon on Friday to advance to Easterns.
