Oct. 30, 2013
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. - The Navy water polo duo of attacker Thomas Patterson and goalie Garrett Sabesky have been named the Collegiate Water Polo Association Southern Division Player and Defensive Player of the Week for their key roles in Navy's 14-9 upset win over No. 13 St. Francis on Saturday.
Patterson, a junior from Orange, Calif., earned the Player of the Week nod after leading Navy's offense with four points against St. Francis. He notched three goals and an assist, as well as drew three ejections to highlight the Midshipmen's offense. With the man-advantage, Navy netted seven goals on Saturday.
On the defensive end of the pool, Sabesky (So., Riverside, Calif.) made 10 saves and held the Terriers to just nine goals to lead the Mids. Coming into the contest, St. Francis, a 2012 NCAA Final Four combatant, averaged 10.3 goals per game. Sabesky rounded off his effort with two assists and one steal.
Patterson, Sabesky and the rest of the Navy water polo team will conclude their regular season this weekend with three home contests. Beginning on Friday at 7:30 p.m., the Mids will host Mercyhurst, George Washington (Sat., 1:30 p.m.) and Johns Hopkins (Sat., 7:15 p.m.) at the Scott Natatorium.
