ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Navy water polo team was named the fifth seed in this coming weekend's CWPA Southern Division Championship that will be hosted by the Naval Academy and held at Lejeune Hall from Friday, November 8 through Sunday, November 10.
The Midshipmen enter the tournament with a 13-14 overall record and a 2-6 mark in CWPA Southern play. Navy finished the regular season with four consecutive wins, including three this past weekend versus squads entered in the Southern Division Championship.
The Mids are in search of their 14th tournament title in its 21st all-time appearance at the Southern Division Championship. Over its first 20 competitions, Navy has posted a 59-8 record with all eight losses coming at the hands of either Princeton (6) or Bucknell (2). Since 2000, the Mids have won seven tournament titles.
Navy opens championship play on Friday at 9 p.m. with a matchup versus the 12th-seeded PSU-Behrend squad at Lejeune Hall. The Mids defeated PSU-Behrend earlier in the year by a 27-3 margin. A win on Friday by the Mids would advance them to a Saturday 1 p.m. contest versus Johns Hopkins, the fourth seed, while a loss would send them into the consolation bracket versus the loser of the Gannon-Notre Dame College game at 2:20 p.m.
After all 10 contests are completed on Saturday, the finals will be held on Sunday with the title game scheduled for a 3:40 p.m. start.
This weekend's championship will determine the six Southern Division teams which will advance to the CWPA Championship on Friday-Sunday, November 22-24, at Brown University in Providence, R.I. Per the league postseason format, the Top Three teams from the Southern Division Championship will automatically gain entry, while the other three Southern Division qualifying teams will be placed into a pool with three At-Large selections to receive the No. 7-to-12 berths in the 12-team league championship field.
The overall seeds for the Southern Division Championship are as follows ... Princeton (1), Bucknell (2), Mercyhurst (3), Johns Hopkins (4), Navy (5), George Washington (6), Washington & Jefferson (7), Gannon (8), Notre Dame College (9), Monmouth Ill.
