Patterson and Sabesky Repeat As CWPA Weekly Award Winners

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. – The Navy water polo duo of attacker Thomas Patterson and goalie Garrett Sabesky were named the CWPA Southern Division Player and Defensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week for their leading roles in the squad’s 3-0 performance versus Mercyhurst, George Washington and Johns Hopkins this past weekend.
Patterson (Jr., Orange, Calif.) led Navy’s offense with 11 points in three games. The junior registered two goals and two assists versus Mercyhurst on Friday to begin his scoring streak. On Saturday, Patterson netted four goals versus George Washington and added two assists before capping his day with a single goal versus Johns Hopkins in the night game. For the week, he had seven goals, four assists and drew six ejections.
Sabesky (So., Lakeside, Calif.) earns his second straight Defensive Player of the Week award for his strong series of games in goal for the Mids. He began his weekend by making a season-high 19 saves versus Mercyhurst on Friday. Sabesky kept up his high level of play into Saturday as he recorded 12 saves versus both George Washington and Johns Hopkins. For the week, he had 43 saves, seven steals and three assists.
Patterson, Sabesky and the rest of the Navy water polo team will begin postseason play this Friday when they host the CWPA Southern Championship. Beginning on Friday at 9 p.m., the Mids will participate in the three-day tournament with the aim to qualify for the CWPA Championship (Nov. 22-24). Navy’s first round matchup will see the fifth-seeded Mids take on the 12th-seeded PSU Behrend squad at 9 p.m. at Lejeune Hall.
