ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Navy water polo player Kyle Wertz was named the CWPA Southern Division Player of the Week after his role in leading the Midshipmen to the CWPA Southern Division Tournament title last weekend.
Wertz, a senior from San Diego, Calif., scored 16 points (10 g, 6 a) in four Navy victories last week. In the opening game against Notre Dame College (Ohio), Wertz tallied one goal and two assists in Navy's 19-8 victory. He then added one goal and one assist in a 16-3 win over Salem International, before amping things up in the semifinals and finals.
In the 11-5 semifinal win over Bucknell, Wertz scored three goals with three assists to lead Navy into the finals against 15th-ranked Princeton. There, he tallied five goals and one assist, having a hand in six of Navy's 10 goals during the day in the Midshipmen's 10-5 win over Princeton. The victory enabled Navy to win its 13th CWPA Southern Division title in 19 seasons, improve to 58-6 during the tournament's history and avenge a pair of overtime losses during the regular season against the Tigers.
Wertz now leads Navy with 69 points on 43 goals and 26 assists, despite playing in just 17 games. Over the weekend, he moved past Sean Foster (1997-00) into 10th place on the school's career scoring list with 241 points on 171 goals (10 out of 10th place) and 70 assists (16 out of 10th place).
Navy, 22-6 on the season, will be the first Southern seed in the CWPA Eastern Championship during the weekend of Nov. 18-20 in Cambridge, Mass. The Mids will either be seeded first or second overall.
