BRIDGEPORT, Pa. - Carpenter Warren of the Navy water polo team was honored by the CWPA as the Southern Division Player of the Week for his leading role in Navy capturing the 2013 CWPA Southern Division Championship this past weekend.
After scoring one goal in limited action with the game well in hand versus PSU Behrend in the first round, Warren (So., Baltimore, Md.) registered multiple goals in each of the next three contests, including three versus Johns Hopkins and four versus Bucknell in the title game. For the week, he accounted for 12 points on 10 goals and two assists for Navy.
Meanwhile, Garrett Sabesky (So., Lakeside, Calif.) was recognized on the conference's Defensive Player of the Week Honor Roll for his efforts in goal for the Midshipmen. The sophomore finished the tournament with 47 saves, four steals and three assists. Sabesky posted a 4-0 record, .635 save percentage and an 8.31 goals against average during the team's championship run.
With Warren's award, the Mids have now collected five weekly honors over the past three weeks. Thomas Patterson (Jr., Orange, Calif.) and Sabesky were back-to-back winners of Player and Defensive Player of the Week accolades on Oct. 28 and Nov. 4.
The red-hot Navy water polo squad, winners of eight straight games, will be off from action this weekend before beginning play at the CWPA Championship at Brown University, Nov. 22-24. The Mids are seeded second in the tournament and will play the winner of the (7) Mercyhurst - (10) MIT match at 4:40 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 22. The winner of the three-day event will automatically qualify for the NCAA Championship.
