ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy water polo team concluded its season last weekend at the NCAA Tournament and two players received honors for their performances during the tournament. The Mids finished the year with a 20-11 overall record and won their third straight Eastern Championship, while placing fourth at the NCAA Tournament.
Senior Michael Mulvey was named second-team All-NCAA Tournament after scoring two goals and two assists in the semifinals loss to top-ranked USC. The two-time CWPA Southern Player of the Year finished his season with team highs in points (105), goals (61) and assists (44). His 105 points were the eighth most in school history and his 44 assists were the fourth most in a single season. Mulvey finished his career with 314 points (205 g, 109 a). His 314 points were the fifth most in school history, while his 205 goals were sixth and his 109 assists were second. Mulvey, who was an honorable mention All-American last year, could become Navy's first first-team All-American in school history when the teams are announced later this month.
Meanwhile, freshman Kyle Wertz was named both the CWPA Eastern Player and Rookie of the Week for his role in Navy's performances at the NCAA Tournament. He scored three goals in both Navy games, making him the leading goal-scorer for the tournament with six goals. Wertz finished his freshman campaign with 63 points on 48 goals and 15 assists. Wertz's 63 points and 48 goals were just behind Mulvey, ranking second on the team in both categories. Wertz's 63 points were also the third most by a freshman in school history and his 48 goals were the second most, just behind Greg Mendenhall's 56 goals in 1993.
Navy finished the year with a 20-11 overall record and will lose six seniors to graduation off this year's team.
