Navy's Highly Touted Rookie Class of Wrestlers Unveiled

Ninth-year Navy wrestling coach Bruce Burnett and his staff have assembled one of the top recruiting classes not only on the East Coast, but on a national level as well. Navy's Class of 2012, which features 13 young men who have captured a combined 20 state titles, is ranked 25th by D1CollegeWrestling.net and 30th by Intermat.

Steele Named Second Alternate at U.S. Olympic Team Trials

Heavyweight wrestler Scott Steele, a rising senior at the Naval Academy, placed third in the 120 kg weight class (freestyle) at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials Sunday evening at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nev. By virtue of his finish, he has qualified as the second alternate for the 2008 Olympics slated for Aug. 8-24 in Beijing, China.

Two-time All-American Matt Stolpinski and 2008 NCAA Tournament qualifier Spencer Manley were among the 88 Div. I wrestlers nationwide to be named to the 2007-08 National Wrestling Coaches Association's All-Academic Team, while the Midshipmen, as a team, tied for 23rd among all wrestling programs with their 2.933 cumulative grade-point average.

Steele Wrestles His Way to U.S. Olympic Team Trials

Navy junior Scott Steele put together a 5-2 record to finish seventh in the 120 kg weight class at the 2008 U.S. Freestyle National Championship held last weekend in Las Vegas, Nev. By virtue of finishing among the top seven in his weight class, Steele has earned the right to compete at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Las Vegas on June 13-15.

USA Wrestling has named Naval Academy graduate Jay Antonelli the 2007 Greco-Roman Coach of the Year. It is the second time in his career that Antonelli has won this prestigious honor (1988, 2007).

Three Midshipmen Place at University Nationals

Navy's Joel Ahern finished as the freestyle runner-up at 70 kg (154.5 pounds) at the ASICS University Nationals last weekend in Akron, Ohio. Additionally, Bryce Saddoris finished fourth at 66 kg (145.5 pounds) and Scott Steele placed seventh at 120 kg (264.5 pounds), with Joey Breen, Matt DeMichiel, Robby Neill, Matt Reck and Glenn Shober also participating at the event. All eight grapplers wrestled freestyle for the Naval Academy Wrestling Club in the two-day tournament.

Seven Midshipmen are among the fourth installment of the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) rankings released Tuesday morning, including 2007 EIWA heavyweight title winner Ed Prendergast (St. Louis, Mo.) who is the favorite at 285 pounds. The Midshipmen, who are ranked third in the EIWA with a 5-1 record behind Cornell (6-0) and Penn (6-1), will head to Franklin & Marshall a week from Saturday to compete in the two-day EIWA Championship (March 8-9).
