The 2015 United World Wrestling Cadet Greco World Championship is set for Aug. 24-26 in Sarajevo.
Nate Engel, a current member of USA Wrestling, is in his second season as an assistant coach at the Naval Academy.
Engel began his collegiate career at William Penn University in the fall of 2002 before transferring to Missouri Valley College in the fall of 2004. A four-time NAIA national qualifier, Engel garnered All-America honors in 2005 following a third-place finish at the NAIA Wrestling Championship and was the 2007 University Greco-Roman National Champion at 55 kg. He graduated from Missouri Valley College in January of 2007 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management.
Engel continued his aspirations of becoming one of the nation’s elite wrestlers earning a spot on the U.S. National Team in 2010 and again in 2013. Along the way, he has achieved numerous accolades, including most recently qualifying for the 2014 World Team Trials. In 2013, he was the World Team Trials runner-up. He was a silver medalist at 55 kg and a bronze medalist at 60 kg in St. Petersburg, Russia. Meanwhile, he scored silver the 2013 Havvisto Tournament and was the Maccabi Games Champion in both Freesyle and Greco-Roman at 55 kg. In 2012, he was the Minnesota Storm Holiday Cup Champion, as well as the Haparanda Cup winner at 55 kg. All told, he has earned U.S. Open All-America status seven times.
While training in Colorado Springs, Engel joined the Air Force wrestling staff in 2013 as a volunteer assistant coach, where he contributed in various different areas. Among them, he worked individually with 125-pound Josh Martinez who was among the nation’s top five throughout the 2013-14 season and amassed a 33-5 record. Additionally, he coached Jesse Stafford who qualified for the U.S. World Team Trials and placed seventh at the 2014 ASICS/Las Vegas Senior U.S. Open Wrestling Championship at 74 kg.
Engel resides in Annapolis with his wife, the former McKayla Crist.
