2011-12 (Fr./So.): After serving a two-year Mormon Mission, Rands enrolled at the Naval Academy where he spent the 2011-12 season as a freshman academically and sophomore in terms of athletic eligibility ... put together a 13-22 record, including a 2-10 mark in dual meets ... placed in three of the six tournaments in which he competed ... earned his first win in a Navy singlet at the Eastern Michigan Open behind a 6-3 victory over Kent State's Ryan Buckner ... went on to place sixth in the tournament ... finished second at the Navy Classic, dropping a 5-2 decision to The Citadel's Kelby Smith in the championship bout ... placed fourth at the All-Academy Championship ... won dual matches against Justin Heisermen of Buffalo and East Stroudsburg's Zachary Koller.

High School: A 2008 graduate of Cary-Grove High School in Cary, Ill., Rands attended Northwestern University as a freshman (2008-09) before serving a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints ... spent his mission in the Spanish-speaking communities of Arizona ... a four-sport athlete in high school, he earned four letters in wrestling, three in football, one each in track and baseball ... produced a career record of 116-28 in wrestling, including a 42-5 mark his senior campaign ... set the school pin record in his junior year with 32 ... garnered All-State (Ill.) honors after finishing fourth at the state championship his senior year ... claimed the Freestyle State Championship his senior year ... voted team captain of the wrestling team three years ... two-time conference, regional and sectional wrestling champion ... two-time all-conference and all-area selection in football who earned All-State honors his senior year ... also served as team captain of the football team as a senior ... his football team lost one-regular season contest during his four seasons ... member of the National Honor Society ... recipient of the Faculty Award, presented to that student who the teachers felt best embodied the spirit of the school.
