• Rands in 2013-14 (Jr.): Earned an NCAA Championship berth by way of his fourth-place finish at the EIWA Championship ... suffered a season-ending knee injury in his opening-round match at the NCAA Championship to top-seeded Nick Heflin of Ohio State ... put together an 18-10 mark that featured a 5-1 dual meet mark ... won the All-Academy Championship with a 3-0 mark that featured a 4-1 victory over Army's Bryce Barnes in the championship bout ... also defeated Barnes in the annual Army-Navy dual, 6-1, to lead the Mids to their 14th consecutive win over the Black Knights ... placed fourth at the Navy Classic ... as the seventh seed, dropped his opening-round match at the EIWA Championship to Penn's Francis Mattiace, 8-3, but bounced back to win four in a row, including back-to-back victories over nationally-ranked James Fox of Harvard (4:58) and Brandon Palik of Drexel (3-1) to punch his ticket to the NCAA Championship ... Palik was the favorite to win as the No. 1 see, while Fox was the fourth seed.
• 2012-13 (So.): Wrestled unattached throughout the year to maintain NCAA eligibility for his final two years at the Academy.
• 2011-12 (Fr./So.): After serving a two-year Mormon Mission, Rands enrolled at the Naval Academy where he spent the 2011-12 season as a freshman academically and sophomore in terms of athletic eligibility ... put together a 13-22 record, including a 2-10 mark in dual meets ... placed in three of the six tournaments in which he competed ... earned his first win in a Navy singlet at the Eastern Michigan Open behind a 6-3 victory over Kent State's Ryan Buckner ... went on to place sixth in the tournament ... finished second at the Navy Classic, dropping a 5-2 decision to The Citadel's Kelby Smith in the championship bout ... placed fourth at the All-Academy Championship ... won dual matches against Justin Heisermen of Buffalo and East Stroudsburg's Zachary Koller.
• at Northwestern (Fr.): Saw time as a starter at heavyweight as a true freshman following a season-ending injury to Ben Kuhar ... finished 5-12 overall and 2-6 in duals ... was 0-5 in the Big Ten and 0-2 at the Big Ten Championship ... pinned Zak Saevre of Northern Illinois in 1:22 in dual match ... also pinned Arizona State's Imamiboum Etukeren for his only victory at Midlands Championship ... was 2-2 at Michigan State Open.
• High School: A 2008 graduate of Cary-Grove High School in Cary, Ill., Rands attended Northwestern University as a freshman (2008-09) before serving a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints ... spent his mission in the Spanish-speaking communities of Arizona ... a four-sport athlete in high school, he earned four letters in wrestling, three in football, one each in track and baseball ... produced a career record of 116-28 in wrestling, including a 42-5 mark his senior campaign ... set the school pin record in his junior year with 32 ... garnered All-State (Ill.) honors after finishing fourth at the state championship his senior year ... claimed the Freestyle State Championship his senior year ... voted team captain of the wrestling team three years ... two-time conference, regional and sectional wrestling champion ... two-time all-conference and all-area selection in football who earned All-State honors his senior year ... also served as team captain of the football team as a senior ... his football team lost one-regular season contest during his four seasons ... member of the National Honor Society ... recipient of the Faculty Award, presented to that student who the teachers felt best embodied the spirit of the school.
• Personal: Son of Steven and Linda Rands ... majoring in Operations Research, he owns a 3.25 grade-point average ... has been named to the Commandant's List six times and has twice appeared on the Superintendent's List ... named to the Dean's List in the fall of his junior year ... his service assignment upon graduation is Marine Corps Pilot.
