CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — The Navy wrestling team had a solid opening day of competition at the 2018 Southern Scuffle where the Mids currently stand fourth among the 24-team field and will advance eight wrestlers to the second day of action.  Paced by semifinalists Jadaen Bernstein (Sr. / Glen Gardner, N.J.) and Jared Prince (So. / Safety Harbor, Fla.), the Mids amassed 50.5 points and combined to win 33 matches on the day.

With 11 wrestlers remaining in the competition, including eight on the championship side of the bracket, Penn State stands atop the leader board with 101 points.  The Nittany Lions hold a 19.5-point advantage over Northern Iowa who is second with 81.5 points and eight wrestler remaining.  Lehigh is third with 68 points and 11 wrestlers active, followed by Navy and Duke (49 pts, 6 wrestlers) rounding out the top five.

Navy had 17 wrestlers competing at the team-scored tournament with six wrestlers seeded - junior Nicholas Gil (Crystal Lake, Ill.), seeded #7 at 141 pounds; sophomore Jared Prince, ranked 11th (at 141 pounds) and seeded third at 149 pounds; senior Zack Davis (Granger, Ind.), seeded #7 at 157 pounds; senior Drew Daniels (Overland Park, Kan.), seeded #4 at 165 pounds; senior Jadaen Bernstein ranked eighth and seeded fourth at 174 pounds; and senior Michael Coleman (Hudson, Ohio), seeded #4 at 184 pounds.

Meanwhile, rounding out the entrants for the Mids were freshman Aslan Kilic (Marietta, Ga.) at 125, freshman Cody Trybus (Elkton, Md.) at 133, senior Corey Wilding (Pittsburgh, Pa.) at 149, freshman Quentin Hovis (Poway, Calif.) at 157, junior Jonathan Carrera (Milton, Mass.) at 165, freshman Tanner Skidgel (Tulsa, Okla.) at 165, sophomore Spencer Carey (Ringwood, N.J.) at 174, sophomore AJ Alford (Beech Island, S.C.) at 174, sophomore Joshua Roetman (Kotzebue, Alaska) at 197, senior Austin Faunce (Lake Oswego, Ore.) at heavyweight and sophomore Andrew Piehl (Rogers, Minn.) at heavyweight.

Eleven of Navy’s 17 wrestlers advanced to the evening session, including seven who competed in the quarterfinals.  Only Bernstein and Prince claimed wins among the quarterfinalists and will advance to Tuesday’s semifinals.  Bernstein scored a 10-5 victory over fifth-seeded and 12th-ranked Keaton Subjeck of Stanford.  Familiar foes, Bernstein defeated Subjeck in the fifth-place match at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational in early December which also turned out to be Bernstein’s 100th career victory.  Bernstein will face defending National Champion and top-seeded Mark Hall of Penn State in the semis.

Prince, meanwhile, made his season debut on Monday after being sidelined the first two months of competition with a knee injury.  He pushed up a weight class to 149 where he put together a 3-0 mark that included an 8-5 victory over Jarod Verkleeren of Penn State (unattached) in the quarters.  Prince’s semifinal matchup will be against Campbell’s Josh Heil who knocked off second-seeded and sixth-ranked Max Thomsen of Northern Iowa in the quarters.

Wrestling on the backside of the bracket on Tuesday will be Gil vs. Air Force’s Alec Opsal, Wilding vs. second-seeded Max Thomsen of Northern Iowa, Davis vs. Josh McClure of North Carolina, Daniels against seventh-seeded Drew Longo of Lehigh, Carey vs. Drexel’s Austin Rose and Coleman vs. seventh-seeded Nick Corba of Cleveland State.
