Freshman Bobby Burg took seventh place at 157 pounds for the Midshipmen.

2013 Southern Scuffle - Final Results

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. —  Navy freshman Bobby Burg (Gasport, N.Y.) and senior Mason Bailey (Fairmont, W.Va.) were among the top eight wrestlers in their respective weight classes as the Mids placed 12th at the 2013 Southern Scuffle held at McKenzie Arena in Chattanooga, Tenn. on Wednesday.

The Mids, who slipped one spot in the final standings with 42.0 points, were just three points behind 11th-place The Citadel.  Meanwhile, top-ranked Penn State took the team title with 178.5 points, while second-rannked Oklahoma State pushed up from third to place second with 158.0 points.  Sixth-ranked Missouri finished third (147.5), followed by No. 3 Minnesota (139.5) in fourth and No. 8 Cornell in fifth (136.0).

Navy began the day with six wrestlers remaining in the competition, but were immediately knocked down to five when it was determined freshman 174-pound Mathew Miller (Edgewood, Md.) would be unable to continue in the tournament due to injury he suffered in his quarterfinals bout on Tuesday evening.

Both Burg and Bailey won their first matches of the day with Burg picking up a 9-1 major decision over Oklahoma State’s Dallas Bailey, 9-1, at 157 pounds.  Ohio’s Spartak Chino, who bounced Burg’s teammate 13th-ranked Bobby Barnhisel (River Forest, Ill.) from the tournament on Tuesday evening, dealt Burg a 7-4 loss in the seventh round of consolations, sending the Navy rookie to the seventh-place match to face The Citadel’s Mathew Frisch.

Burg led from the opening whistle, scoring a takedown just over 30 seconds into the bout.  He owned a 4-1 lead after the first period and a 4-2 advantage heading into the final stanza.  Burg opened the third period with an escape, but Frisch made things interesting when he took Burg to the mat to narrow his deficit to one at 5-4 with 1:19 remaining.  Burg got free to take a 6-4 lead, but allowed Frisch to take him down once again with one second left.  Burg, however, took a 7-6 victory thanks to better than two minutes of riding time.  He finished the tournament with a 5-2 record, boosting his season mark to 9-7 in what was just his third competition of his career.

Bailey, ranked 20th at 184 pounds, earned a 4-2 win over Virginia’s Stephen Doty in Wednesday’s opener, setting up a seventh round consolation match against 16th-ranked Chris Chionuma of Oklahoma State.  Chionuma, who defeated Navy’s James Mannier on Tuesday by a 10-3 count, produced a 6-1 decision over Bailey, sending him to the seventh-place bout and a rematch against Missouri’s John Eblen.

It was Eblen who handed Bailey his first loss of the tournament and it would be Eblen who would again stop Bailey in the consolations.  Eblen controlled the match early on by making the first move and scoring the match’s first points with a takedown in the first minute.  He rode Bailey for better than a minute and a half before Bailey could escape and trim the lead to one at 2-1 at the end of the first.  It would be the closest Bailey would come as he dropped a 6-3 decision to place eighth.

Navy’s other three wrestlers dropped their opening-round matches on Wednesday, ending their day early.  Sophomore 133-pound Colton Rasche (Plano, Ill.) was tripped by Mark Grey, who was unattached, 4-0, while senior 197-pound Oscar Huntley (Stafford, Va.) dropped a 10-6 decision to 11th-ranked Brent Haynes of Missouri.  Senior heavyweight Dan Miller (Berlin, Md.) lost a heartbreaker to Penn State’s James Lawson in sudden victory, 3-1.

Meanwhile, Navy’s Paul Rands (Cary, Ill.), who was entered in the competition as an unattached wrestler, also came up short in his bout against Air Force’s Joshua Mohr, losing 4-3 in the sixth round of consolations.

“We absolutely have a ton of work to do,” said Navy head coach Bruce Burnett.  “When our guys went on Christmas vacation, some of them literally took a vacation.  Wrestling is different than other sports, it’s 24 and 7.  How you eat, how you rest, how you train, it all gives you the mindset that you are able to compete if you do everything right.  If you do any one of those things wrong, it impacts your performance and we saw that this week.  We had a lot of guys come back not prepared to compete at the level that I expect them to, that they should expect themselves to compete at.

“I do think we had some good performances, but just not enough of them.  We lost a lot of close matches in one of the toughest tournaments out there, but we have to get better in those situations if we are going to put anyone on the podium at the national tournament.  That is our goal and it’s my job to help get them ready.”

Navy will send part of its team to the Franklin & Marshall Open this Saturday before facing EIWA foe Lehigh in Annapolis a week from Saturday at Alumni Hall.
