2013 Season Comes to A Close for Navy Wrestling

Navy junior Raymond Borja earned a 9-6 victory over Central Michigan's Donnie Corby in the consolation second round.

March 22, 2013

DES MOINES, Iowa —  Navy’s wrestling season came to a conclusion on Friday afternoon, as the Mids’ final two wrestlers competing at the 2013 NCAA Wrestling Championship at Wells Fargo Center in Des Moines, Iowa, bowed out of the double-elimination tournament.

Senior 184-pound Mason Bailey (Fairmont, W.Va.) and junior 149-pound Raymond Borja (Virginia Beach, Va.) both won their second-round consolation matches on Friday morning.  Borja kicked things off by dealing Central Michigan’s Donnie Corby a 9-6 loss, but succumbed to sixth-seeded Dylan Ness of Minnesota in the third round of the consolation bracket.  Borja finished the season with a 24-9 record.

Bailey, meanwhile, scored a 6-1 decision over Ohio State’s Cody Magrum to open Friday’s wrestlebacks.  His career, however, came to an end in the afternoon after fifth-seeded Kevin Steinhaus of Minnesota edged Bailey, 4-1.  He closes out his career with a 75-46 record, including a 31-15 mark this season.

“I felt like all six of our guys wrestled pretty tough over the last few days,” said Navy head coach Bruce Burnett.  “The draw play a huge role and being focused is important.  There were times that we were zeroed in and some times that we were quite at our top performance.  Unfortunately you can’t make mistakes at this level and expect to be on top of that podium.

“All that said, our guys prepared hard all season long and we had six young men represent the Naval Academy at the National Tournament.  While it’s disappoint that we weren’t able to get an All-American, the future of the program is bright with three returning NCAA qualifiers.”
