Senior Johnny Watson scored the match-tying victory over freshman Ryan Harman.
Nov. 4, 2013
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- After dropping five of the first six matches at the annual Blue-Gold Wrestling Challenge match held over the weekend at the Wesley Brown Field House, the Navy Blue squad put together a fierce comeback to win the final four matches and even the match score at 15-15. The Blue team was eventually deemed the winner (16-15) after each team's points were added up and Blue owned a 57-54 advantage. The Blue-Gold Match is held annually as a preview to Navy wrestling fans as the program kicks of the 2013-14 campaign this Saturday at the Michigan State Open in East Lansing, Mich.
"Overall I believe the guys competed well and continued to get points in close matches," said Navy interim head coach Brian Antonelli. "We still have a lot of work to do in the practice room and through our open tournaments.
"Individually, James Mannier competed well in a tough offensive bout and performed well in all three positions. Joe Locksmith's conditioning looked good and Willie Fox continues to get better with each practice and each competition."
The following is a weight-by-weight breakdown of the matches:
184 - James Mannier (G) dec. William Miller (B), 10-8
Sophomore William Miller (Chinook, Mont.) opened the match with a takedown, but would give way to a reversal and a takedown by Navy's team captain James Mannier (Troy, Ohio) in the opening period to trail 4-3. Miller again scored a takedown following Mannier's escape, but Mannier would again reverse the hold and owned a 7-6 lead entering the final period. Mannier held off Miller with a takedown and riding time in the final period to earn the 10-8 victory.
197 - Thomas Manning (G) dec. Stout Watson (B), 5-2
Junior Thomas Manning (Tooele, Utah), who has seen action in just four matches during his career, scored a solid 5-2 victory over second-year wrestler Stout Watson (Lexington, N.C.), who pushed up three weight classes this season. After a scoreless opening period, Manning earned the first point via an escape followed by a takedown only to be reversed by Watson. With a 3-2 advantage heading into the final period, Manning tacked on a point for an escape and riding time.
HWT - Colynn Cook (B) dec Brendan Kahle (G), 6-3
With Dan Miller graduating last May, the heavyweight position is wide open. Junior Colyn Cook (Murrysville, Pa.) became the early favorite for the starting job after delivering a 6-3 decision over fellow junior Brendan Kahle (Abingdon, Md.). Cook scored a pair of takedowns in the match and built up riding time, while Kahle's three points came by way of escapes.
125 - Brenden Campbell (G) dec. Taylor French (B), 9-4
Freshman Brenden Campbell (New Castle, Ind.) dominated fellow rookie Taylor French (Forsyth, Mont.) early in the match scoring a pair of takedowns and a two-point near fall in the opening period before turning in a 9-4 win.
133 - Colton Rasche (G) dec. Dakota Beach (B), 10-5
Junior Colton Rasche (Plano, Ill.) put together four takedowns in his match against sophomore Dakota Beach (Rio Rico, Ariz.) and built up nearly two minutes of riding time to post a 10-5 win. All five of Beach's points were escapes.
141 - Joe Locksmith (G) dec. Quentin Leadbeter (B), 6-0
Senior Joe Locksmith (Kissimmee, Fla.) built up 1:37 in riding time while also scoring a pair of takedowns to earn a 6-0 victory over junior Quentin Leadbeter (Owings, Md.).
149 - Willie Fox (B) dec. Alex Johnson (G), 4-3
Sophomore Willie Fox (Gilroy, Calif.) put together a pair of takedowns in the opening period against senior Alex Johnson (Memphis, Tenn.) and went on to cruise to a 9-3 victory, jump-starting the Blue team's rally.
157 - Zach Johnson (B) dec. Bobby Burg (G), 5-2
Alex Johnson's twin brother, Zach Johnson (Memphis, Tenn.), upset sophomore Bobby Burg (Gasport, N.Y.) by taking Burg down to the mat twice in the final period and building riding time to post a 5-2 victory.
165 - Peyton Walsh (B) dec. John Keck (G), 10-3
Returning NCAA qualifier Peyton Walsh (Glen Allen, Va.) nearly had sophomore John Keck (Wading River, N.Y.) pinned in the opening period, as he jumped out to a 5-1 advantage thanks to a 3-point near fall. Walsh would get another takedown in the third period and added two escapes and riding time en route to a 10-3 decision.
174 - Johnny Watson (B) dec. Ryan Harman (G), 8-3
Senior Johnny Watson (Lexington, N.C.) and freshman Ryan Harman (West Linn, Ore.) went into the final period deadlocked at two points apiece when Watson turned the agressor. The veteran scored a pair of takedowns in the third period and gained riding time to post an 8-3 victory and the five-point differential would be enough at the end of the match to give the Blue team the victory.
