ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Navy freshman wrestler Mathew Miller (Edgewood, Md.) has been named the NAAA Athlete of the Week Presented by Rolls-Royce, as well as the EIWA Wrestler of the Week after claiming the 174-pound title at the 19th Annual All-Academy Wrestling Championship over the weekend.
Ranked 12th nationally in his weight class, Miller had little trouble en route to becoming just the eighth freshman in program history to claim an individual title at the annual tournament involving the eight military institutions. Miller opened up with a tech fall (15-) over VMI’s John Dommert and punched his ticket into the finals by way of fall (3:20) over Jack Duane. A shot by Air Force’s Daniel Barringer proved to be a mistake as Miller powered him to the mat and took the title in just under two minutes.
The All-Academy Championship marked Miller’s third individual crown won this season. He won the first 11 matches of his career, taking titles at the Eastern Michigan Open and the Roadrunner Open along the way. Miller owns a 20-4 record this season, including a 3-2 mark in dual action.
He and his Navy teammates return to action this weekend when the Mids play host to American in what will be the seniors’ final appearance at home. Navy and American will battle one another on Saturday beginning at 7:00 pm at the Wesley Brown Field House.
