Davis and Wilding Receive EIWA Academic Achievement Awards
2016-17 EIWA Academic Achievement Awards
ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Navy wrestlers Zack Davis (Jr / Granger, Ind.) and Corey Wilding (Jr / Pittsburgh, Pa.) were recently recognized by the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association for their success both on and off the mat. The Navy duo were among the 75 student-athletes who received EIWA Academic Achievement Awards for the 2016-17 season.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.20 and participated in the EIWA Championship OR achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.00 and qualified for the NCAA Championships through the EIWA.
A systems engineering major, Davis boasts a 3.79 grade-point average and is ranked 156th in his class of 1,090 students in Academic Order of Merit. He has been named to the Commandant’s List all five semesters at the Academy, earning Dean’s List recognition twice and Superintendent’s List honors three times.
Davis is also among the leaders in Military Order of Merit where he ranks 50th and is 97th in Overall Order of Merit.
After qualifying for the NCAA Championship a year ago at 133 pounds, Davis pushed up a weight class in 2016-17. By February, he was competing at 149 pounds and went on to represent the team at the EIWA Championship at 157 pounds. He produced his third consecutive 20-win season by posting a 20-10 record that featured third-place finishes at the East Stroudsburg Open, Franklin & Marshall Open and Edinboro Open. He upset 15th-ranked Victor Lopez of Bucknell in the opening round of the EIWA Championship and went on to place sixth.
Wilding turned in a 19-14 record, including a 4-6 mark in dual action as the Mids’ starter at 149 pounds. Over the course of the season, he won the Harold Nichols Open and placed third at the All-Academy Championship. He also earned a 14-2 major decision over Nick Noel in the annual Army-Navy Star Match.
An operations research major, Wilding has achieved a 4.00 GPA in four of his five semesters at the Academy and is on track to match that mark again this spring. He owns a 3.98 GPA and is ranked 46th in his class in Academic Order of Merit. Additionally, he stands fifth in Military Order of Merit and 19th in Overall Order of Merit. He has appeared on both the Superintendent’s and Commandant’s Lists in each of his five semesters in Annapolis.
