Navy Wrestling’s Nate Engel Victorious At Maccabiah USA Team Trials

April 4, 2017

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Third-year Navy wrestling assistant coach Nate Engel turned in a 4-0 record to win the 57 kg / 125.5 lbs. weight class at the Maccabiah USA Team Trials held this past Sunday at the University of Pennsylvania.  Engel will represent the United States at the 20th Maccabiah Games in Israel, July 4-18.

A former Team USA member in Greco-Roman, Engel won all four of his matches by technical fall, including a 12-2 decision over Colorado state high school champion Moshe Schwartz, a past USA Wrestling Cadet Triple Crown winner.

“I am excited to represent the United States and the United States Naval Academy at the 2017 World Maccabiah Games,” said Engel.  “I want to thank Navy head coach Joel Sharratt and members of the Navy wrestling program for helping prepare me for the opportunity to try and win gold again. This is especially meaningful to my grandparents who are holocaust survivors and have shared with me our great Jewish heritage. The Maccabiah Games are renown throughout the world, and I am excited to go back one last time to represent my family and the nation.”

This will be Engel’s second consecutive World Maccabiah Games appearance after winning gold medals in both freestyle and Greco-Roman in 2013 where he finished the tournament with a combined 5-0 record.

The Maccabiah Games, a competition for Jewish athletes across the world, is the third-largest multi-sport event behind the Olympic Games and the Pan American Games. Wrestlers will be part of the more than 1,100 athletes representing Team USA at the 2017 World Maccabiah Games, which features 10,000 athletes from 80 countries, participating in 43 sports.
