Carey Crowned UWW Junior Greco-Roman National Champion
ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Navy freshman wrestler Spencer Carey (Ringwood, N.J.) scored a last-second move over Adam Blees to win the Greco-Roman 79 kilogram weight class at the 2017 United World Wrestling Junior Nationals in Las Vegas over the weekend. Carey was one of four Navy wrestlers to place overall in Greco-Roman and one of three to place among the top three as the Navy Regional Training Center was crowned the UWW Junior Greco-Roman Team Champion.
Carey easily cruised past his first three opponents - Aaron Trystad of Otero (11-0), Fritz Schierl of Ohio Regional Training Center (10-0) and Anthony Sherry of Powerhouse (8-0) - defeating the trio by a combined 29-0 mark. He went on to face Adam Blees from the Minnesota State Moorhead Dragons in finals where he found himself down 4-0 after the opening period. Carey, however, battled back and with 30 seconds to go in the match, he snapped Blees into a front headlock and was able to scoot behind him for the takedown to draw to within one (4-3). As time expired, Carey was awarded the match-winning points by executing a gut wrench. Much to the dismay of Blees’ corner, its challenge was denied and Carey claimed the national title by a 6-4 count.
In addition to Carey, AJ Alford (Fr / Beech Island, S.C.) placed third at 79 kilograms, Joshua Roetman (Fr / Kotzebue, Alaska) took third at 96 kilograms and Mike Smith (Fr / Mt. Airy, Md.) finished sixth at 120 kilograms. By way of their finish, Carey, Alford and Roetman have qualified for the USA Wrestling Junior World Team Trials slated to be held June 9-10 in Lincoln, Neb.
Navy also had wrestlers coming in the UWW Junior Freestyle competition with three placing - Alford took sixth at 79 kilograms, Roetman was sixth at 96 kilograms and Carey placed eighth at 79 kilograms.
Three-Time NCAA qualifier Jadaen Bernstein (Jr / Glen Gardner, N.J.), 2017 NCAA qualifier Steban Cervantes (Jr / Chula Vista, Calif.), 2016 NCAA qualifier Zack Davis (Jr / Granger, Ind.), Austin Faunce (Jr / Lake Oswego, Ore.) and John Kenyon (Jr / Lewiston, Idaho) took part in the UWW Senior Freestyle tournament where they faced a number of past World Team members and Olympians.
