ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Navy junior wrestler Paul Rands (Cary, Ill.) has been named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division I All-Academic Team it was announced on Thursday. Eighty-eight wrestlers across the country were honored for their classroom success by the NWCA, including 77 NCAA qualifiers and 33 All-Americans.
Rands, an Operations Research major, boasts a 3.25 grade-point average and is ranked in the top third of his class at the Academy. He has been named to the Commandant’s List four times, while also appearing on the Dean’s List and the Superintendent’s List once. Additionally, Rands is ranked 149th among his class of 1,107 students in military order of merit.
A starter for the Mids at 197 pounds, Rands earned his first invitation to the NCAA Championship this spring after placing fourth at the EIWA Championship. His dream of gaining All-America honors, however, was cut short after suffering a season-ending knee injury in his opening bout at the NCAA Championship against top-seeded and national runner-up Nick Heflin of Ohio State. Rands posted an 18-10 record on the year that featured a 5-1 dual mark.
