ANNAPOLIS, Md. —  First-year Navy wrestling coach Joel Sharratt and his staff have welcomed a talented group of newcomers to the Naval Academy this summer, as Navy’s Class of 2018 features wrestlers who have combined to capture more than 20 state titles and hail from 15 different states.

“The Navy wrestling team and staff are excited to welcome the Class of 2018 to the Naval Academy this summer to begin their training in the hall and on the mats,” said Sharratt, who is no stranger to the service academies, having spent six years (2000-06) as an assistant coach at Navy before serving as the head coach at Air Force for the last eight.  “The freshman class has the talent to support the depth we have returning from our upperclassmen, including returning NCAA qualifiers Peyton Walsh, Mat Miller, Paul Rands and Colton Rasche.

“Early on we can see there is a strong competitive fire in the young men joining the program this summer and their talent will bring both depth and potential challenges for a few of our starting positions for the 2014-15 season.  The challenges these young men are facing during Plebe summer are palatable, however, they have shown up for their daily workouts with great attitudes and are putting forth an outstanding effort.”

There are a handful of Incoming freshmen who have the potential to make an immediate impact, including Jadaen Bernstein, Steban Cervantes and Drew Daniels who spent last season at the Naval Academy Prep School.  A product of Rockhurst High School in Missouri, Daniels won the state title his senior year at 160 pounds and went on to claim an individual crown at 165 pounds at the 2014 NWCA Championship.  Bernstein was a three-time New Jersey state placewinner who placed fourth at the 2014 NCWA Championship at 184 pounds.  Meanwhile, Cervantes was an All-American at Poway High School in California and is coming off a fifth-place effort at the 2014 NCWA Championship also at 184 pounds.

Additionally, Mike Coleman, Zack Davis, Rodney Hahn and Cameron Timok are direct entries who enjoyed decorated careers and hope to cash in on that same success this winter.  Hahn was a three-time Missouri state champion, while Coleman twice took fourth at the Ohio State Championship.  Timok was a four-time Virginia state placewinner who produced a 40-2 record in 2013 and claimed the state title while placing as the runner-up at the 2013 NHSCA Junior Nationals.

There are a number of other freshmen to keep an eye on as the season begins in October, Alex Ashley, Tyler Davidson, Sam Davis, Austin Faunce, Marcel Laplante, Brant Leadbeter, Nick Mabry, Robert Mannier, Cory Morgan, Sam Odell, Donald Shovestull and Hudson Staub.

The 2014 Navy Wrestling Plebe Smoker will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 12 at Alumni Hall beginning at 6:00 pm for those fans interested in getting their first glimpse of the Navy newcomers.  Meanwhile, be sure to come out and support Navy wrestling on Oct. 24 when the Mids hold their annual Blue-Gold Challenge Matches at 7:00 pm at Wesley Brown Field House.
