Lloyd Rogers Joins Navy Wrestling Staff
Oct. 31, 2013
ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Navy wrestling interim head coach Brian Antonelli has announced that two-time NCAA qualifier and Hawkeye Wrestling Club member Lloyd Rogers has joined the program’s staff as an assistant coach. Rogers is the newest addition to the Navy wrestling coaching staff, joining Danny Song, who came aboard in August from Bloomsburg.
“We’re excited about the addition of Lloyd to our wrestling program,” said Antonelli, who begins his eighth season at the Naval Academy and first as interim head coach. “Lloyd brings an intensity, coaching philosophy and winning attitude that is a perfect fit for the Navy wrestling program. Our upper weights will benefit greatly from his senior level experience and attitude.”
‘I’m excited to have the opportunity to work at the Naval Academy,” said Rogers. “Coaching wrestling at the Div. I level is something I have aspired to do for many years. I’ve been fortunate throughout my career as a wrestler to have learned from some great coaches and in turn it has helped prepare me to become a coach at the highest level.
“I have great respect and admiration for what our wrestlers are committed to doing upon graduation and embrace what the academies, the Navy and the Marine Corps stand for,” added Rogers. “If we can take that mentality and translate it to the mat, along with wrestling with our focus on scoring points, I believe we will have great success. I am looking forward to working with Coach Antonelli, Coach Song and the entire Navy wrestling support staff in continuing the great tradition that is Navy wrestling.”
Rogers comes to Annapolis after serving as an intern with the University of Iowa wrestling program where he was involved in all aspects of the program including sitting on the committee for the Dirty Hawk Mudder, the Hawkeye Wrestling Club fundraiser. Additionally, Rogers served as the Eastern Iowa Wrestling Club coach for the last year and was a member of the Hawkeye Wrestling Club from 2009 to 2013.
Rogers was a standout wrestler at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga where he was a two-time NCAA qualifier (174 lbs), a Southern Conference champion and the 2008 Southern Conference Wrestler of the Year.
As a freestyle wrestler, Rogers claimed the 2009 University National title after placing as the runner-up a year prior. He finished seventh at the 2010 US Open and sixth in 2011. He competed in the World Team Trial in 2009, ‘10 and ‘11 in preparation to compete in the 2012 Olympic Trials.
Rogers has also leant his leadership and experience to a number of camps over the years, including at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, the University of Iowa, the Workhorse Wrestling Camps and the Wrestle the World Camps to name a few.
An Academic All-Southern Conference selection and member of the honor roll, Rogers graduated from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice. He received his Master of Science in kinesiology and sport management from the University of Central Missouri in 2012.
