Navy Wrestling Travels West for Roadrunner Open

Senior Zach Basich looks to build upon his fourth-place finish last week at the EMU Open.

Nov. 8, 2012

ANNAPOLIS, Md. --  After putting four wrestlers atop the winners podium a week ago at the season-opening Eastern Michigan Open, the Navy wrestling team will look to build upon its moment by traveling to the West Coast and partaking in the Roadrunner Open.  While CSU Bakersfield is the host of the 18-team tournament, Selland Arena in Fresno, Calif. will serve as the venue for Saturday's event which is scheduled to get underway at 12:00 pm Pacific, 3:00 pm Eastern.

A non-team-scored event, the following schools are expected to send wrestlers to the tournament:  Arizona State, Bakersfield College, Cal Baptist, Cal Poly, CSU Bakersfield, Cuesta College, Drexel, Fresno City College, Grand Canyon, Menlo, Mt. Sac College, Navy, Northwestern, Sacramento City College, San Francisco State, Sierra College, Simpson (Calif.) and Stanford.

Fans unable to attend the event in person can follow via live scoring at TrackWrestling

Last weekend, Navy's Bobby Barnhisel (River Forest, Ill.), Peyton Walsh (Glen Allen, Va.), Mathew Miller (Edgewood, Md.) and Paul Rands (Cary, Ill.) took individual titles at the annual Eastern Michigan Open at 157, 165, 174 and 197 pounds, respectively, with Walsh, Miller and Rands winning their first collegiate tournaments crowns.  Barnhisel now has two tournament crowns to his credit after claiming last year's All-Academy Championship.  Miller looked particularly strong in his first collegiate tournament, winning three of his five matches by seven or more point and winning by fall in his other two matches.

Seniors Zach Basich (Wheeling, W.Va.), Mason Bailey (Fairmont, W.Va.), Oscar Huntley (Stafford, Va.) and Dan Miller (Berlin, Md.) also put forth solid efforts with Miller taking third at heavyweight, Basich finishing fourth at 149 pounds and Huntley and Bailey placing fifth at 157 and 184 pounds, respectively.

While Navy's heavier weights flourished at last weekend's tournament, Navy head coach Bruce Burnett is looking for more out of the lighter weights.  Sophomore 125-pound Patrick Prada (Laurel, Md.) spent the first half of his rookie campaign as the Mids' go-to as Tyler Sackett was healing from a knee injury.  Prada recorded a 3-12 record in his freshman season and put together a 2-2 mark last weekend.

Sophomores Quentin Leadbeter (Owings, Md.) and Colton Rasche (Plano, Ill.) are battling one another for the starting 133-pound job with the graduation of NCAA qualifier Aaron Kalil.  Both wrestlers struggled in the opening weekend, posting 1-2 marks.  Junior Joe Locksmith (Kissimmee, Fla.) turned in a 3-2 mark on opening weekend at 141 pounds, coming up a match short to wrestle for one of the top six spots.
