ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy wrestling team kicks off the 2013-14 campaign on Saturday when it travels to East Lansing, Mich. to take part in the Michigan State Open. Action is slated to begin at 9:00 am ET at Jenison Field House with finals and medal matches set for 6:00 pm. Fifteen Midshipmen will be making their season debut at the open tournament.
"The team is excited to get on the road and compete against someone from outside our wrestling room," said first-year interim head coach Brian Antonelli. "There will be a number of talented wrestlers at the Michigan State Open which will provide a good test for our team early in the season. Wrestling high caliber wrestlers now is always a good indication of what our strengths are and what we'll need to go back and correct."
While both 149-pound Raymond Borja (Virginia Beach, Va.) and 174-pound Mathew Miller (Edgewood, Md.) are ranked among the nation's top 20 in their respective weight classes according to Amateur Wrestling News, Borja will sit out this weekend to rest a leg injury. Miller, who did not compete in last weekend's Blue-Gold Challenge Matches, will be on the mat Saturday. Ranked 11th nationally, Miller stands No. 1 in the EIWA after putting together a 24-7 record as a rookie that featured a runner-up performance at the EIWA Championship. Miller won three tournaments a year ago.
Meanwhile, junior Peyton Walsh (Glen Allen, Va.) returns after punching his ticket to compete in last year's NCAA Championship at 165 pounds. Walsh is unranked nationally, but is ranked No. 2 in the EIWA. He produced a 28-13 record a year ago, including a 6-1 mark in dual action. He won a pair of tournament titles and placed fourth at the EIWA Championship. In addition to Walsh, Borja and Miller scored automatic bids to last year's NCAA Championship.
Three Midshipmen will be making their collegiate debut on Saturday, including the rookie tandem of Brenden Campbell (New Castle, Ind.) and Taylor French (Forsyth, Mont.) at 125 pounds. Additionally, sophomore Willie Fox (Gilroy, Calif.) will see his first action in a Navy singlet at 149 pounds.
