Navy Travels to Boston U. for Season-Opening Dual

Sophomore 157-pound Bobby Burg will face No. 12 Nestor Taffur, who has one loss this season.

Dec. 12, 2013

ANNAPOLIS, Md. —  Navy (0-0) and Boston University (1-4) will meet for the first time on the mat when the two wrestling programs battle one another Saturday evening (5:00 pm) at Case Gym in Boston.

Boston U., who is in its first season as a member of the EIWA, enters Saturday’s matchup with a 1-4 dual record and is coming off a 24-19 victory over Davidson last weekend.  The Terriers, meanwhile have dropped duals against Rutgers (16-15), Penn (25-9) Hofstra (35-6) and top-ranked Penn State (34-6).  The headline matchup on Saturday will likely be at the 157-pound weight class where Boston senior Nestor Taffur is ranked 12th nationally with a 15-1 record overall and a flawless 5-0 mark in dual action.  He will face Navy freshman Bobby Burg, who is 9-2 this season and won both of his dual matches a year ago.  Meanwhile, Boston senior heavyweight Kevin Innis is the only other Terrier who owns a winning record in dual action with a 3-2 mark.

“Boston University is a good wrestling team,” said Navy interim head coach Brian Antonelli.  “They really match up well against us, so this is going to be a challenging match.  Having wrestled all tournaments to date, we have to change our mindset from multiple matches in a day to one seven-minute bout.”

The Mids opened their season on Nov. 9 at the Michigan State Open where five Navy wrestlers finished among the top eight, including junior 133-pound Colton Rasche (Plano, Ill.) who placed second.  The following week, sophomore 174-pound Mathew Miller (Edgewood, Md.) picked up his fourth career tournament title, while six other Mids placed among the top six at the Roadrunner Open.

With 10 wrestlers placing including a pair in the finals, Navy placed second at the 36th annual Navy Classic held on Nov. 23.  Meanwhile, last weekend juniors Peyton Walsh (Glen Allen, Va.) and Rasche, along with sophomore Bobby Burg (Gasport, N.Y.) placed among the top eight in their respective weight classes at the 32nd-Annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, as the Midshipmen finished the tournament in 16th place.

A fairly veteran lineup, just two of the 10 wrestlers expected to wrestle on Saturday night will be making their first career dual meet appearance.  Rookie Brenden Campbell (New Castle, Ind.) owns a 5-5 record at 125 pounds, while junior Colynn Cook (Murrysville, Pa.) inherited the heavyweight position from 2013 graduate and NCAA qualifier Dan Miller.  Cook owns a 9-7 record this season which includes a fifth-place finish at the Navy Classic.

Team captain James Mannier (Troy, Ohio) has wrestled in a pair of duals during his career, but you’d have to turn the page back a few years to find those results.  The 184-pound senior will make his first dual appearance since dropping a pair of duals as a sophomore.

Walsh, who owns a 13-7 record this winter, enjoyed the most success last season in dual action, putting together a 6-1 record, while 13th-ranked Mathew Miller turned in a 5-2 record a year ago at 174 pounds.  Miller, who has battled injuries throughout his early career, stands 10-3 on the year.

Rasche entered the national rankings this week at No. 19 after placing in three of the four tournaments in which he has wrestled.  The lone tournament he did not place in was the Navy Classic, where he bowed out due to injury.  He owns a 13-5 record this season and looks to build off his 4-3 dual mark from a season ago.
