Seven Mids Listed in Second EIWA Rankings of Year
Dec. 14, 2005
EIWA Rankings | National Rankings ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The 24th-ranked Navy wrestling team is well represented in the most-recent EIWA rankings released on Monday, with seven wrestlers ranked in the top six of their respective weight classes. The Mids continue to be paced by senior heavyweight Tanner Garrett, who is ranked first in his weight class. Four others are in the top four. The EIWA gains 44 qualifiers to the NCAA Tournament in March, and the top three finishers at the EIWA Tournament in each weight class are guaranteed a trip to the NCAA meet. Coaches will determine whether to take the fourth-place finishers with four wildcards or the top three finishers with 14 wildcards at the EIWA Tournament wildcard meeting, which takes place during the tournament. Garrett, a senior from Tulsa, Okla., is ranked first in the heavyweight division for the second straight poll. Garrett owns a 21-1 overall record and has a 92-29 career record. He is currently tied for ninth on the school's all-time victory list and needs just eight more wins to become the sixth wrestler in school history with 100 victories. His 121 matches are the 11th most in school history. Garrett is ranked anywhere from sixth to ninth in the four major individual polls. Holding down second at 149 pounds is junior John Cox. Cox owns a 19-4 record in 2005-06 and has a career mark of 68-21. Cox is ranked anywhere from 10th to 17th in the four major individual polls. Three of his four losses have come against ranked foes. Ranked third is 157-pounder Adam Brochetti and 174-pounder Matt Stolpinski. Brochetti is just 6-2 on the season, but owns a 4-1 dual-meet record. His lone dual-meet loss came to 16th-ranked Nathan Galloway of Penn State, 3-1 in overtime. Stolpinski is 12-3 on the season with all three of his losses coming to wrestlers currently ranked in the top 15, by a combined eight points. Coming in at fourth is 165-pounder Craig Dziewiatkowski. He is 3-4 on the season after suffering an injury during Navy's west coast swing, and has not wrestled since. Dziewiatkowski, however, should be able to wrestle in the Southern Scuffle and is aiming for a second straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. Two other wrestlers, Spencer Manley (141 pounds) and Andrew Adams (197 pounds), are ranked sixth, respectively. As a team, the Mids are ranked third in the EIWA rankings, behind Lehigh and Cornell. Navy finished third at last year's EIWA Tournament. This year's EIWA Tournament will be held in Bethlehem, Pa., hosted by Lehigh on March 4-5. Navy's next action will be in the Southern Scuffle on Dec. 29-30, in Greensboro, N.C. Navy, which finished third out of 23 teams last year, will be one of 32 teams to compete. # GO NAVY #
