SALISBURY, Md. – The Navy men’s cross country team began its 2017 season on Saturday with a strong showing at the 21st Annual Salisbury Fall Classic. Racing with a team of 11 freshmen on the 8K course at Winter Place Park in Salisbury, the Mids edged the host Seagulls by one point for the team title, while Quinn Schneider (Cornelius, N.C.) took the individual crown in his first collegiate race.

“Because we were the only Division 1 team at the meet, we just ran our plebes today,” remarked head coach Al Cantello. “I was mildly surprised the we were able to win.”

Schneider, the 2015 and 2016 North Carolina Class 1A State Cross Country Champion, displayed his skills on Saturday with a 4.08-second victory with a final result of 25:39.33. He out-dueled Sailsbury’s David Strickland down the stretch, who came in right behind at 25:44.25.

The duo of Ben Cracraft (Northville, Mich.) and Julian Perez (Beaumont, Texas) finished back-to-back in fourth and fifth place for Navy, respectively with times of 25:47.20 and 25:49.42.

Dawson Podlena (Topeka, Kan.) made it four Mids in the top-10 as he posted the 10th-fastest time at 26:06.83.

Michael McMahon (Solana Beach, Calif.) finished 13 seconds behind Podlena in 14th place with a time of 26:19.66. Robert Graham (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Greg Galbreath (Huntingdon Valley, Pa.) rounded out Navy’s top-seven by ranking 19th and 20th, respectively at 26:50.33 and 26:53.98.

In the team standings, the Mids won the overall meet with 30 team points. Navy held off Salisbury by one point as the host Seagulls recorded a total of 31. Kutztown (64), Shenandoah (133) and Delaware Tech (135) rounded out the field of five teams at the event.
