PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The Navy men's cross country team opened the 2010 season on Saturday morning at the UMES Lid Lifter Invitational where they took home the team title. Navy led the field with 28 points, followed by Norfolk State, which took second with 33 points.

"It was an absolute perfect test," said Navy head coach Al Cantello. "Four people set the pace right from the start, so in terms of a baptism for the 2010 season, we couldn't ask for a better script."

Sophomore Ricky Hoyt led all Navy runners as he took second place with a time of 25:34.09. Hoyt's teammates followed by securing the fifth through eighth spots as C.J. Elward (25:49.66), Drew Coco (25:57.01), Robert Alvarado (26:03.94) and Chris Burns (26:04.26) finished in consecutive order.

Navy did not bring its top nine runners and several Mids ran unattached.

"We're very pleased with some of our younger guys today," said Cantello. "We couldn't have asked for a better start to the season."

The Mids will return to action on Saturday (Sept. 11) the Harry Groves Invitational in University Park, Pa.
