Bronx, N.Y. - For the second time competing at Van Cortlandt Park this season, the Navy men's cross country finished third at 19th Annual Br. John "Paddy" Doyle Meet of Champions on Saturday, Sept. 21. 13th-ranked Iona led all 20 teams, having placed all five of its scoring runners in the top-12.
"Was I unhappy with the result, no. However, was I happy with the result, no," stated head coach Al Cantello. "We were not at full strength for the second consecutive week and we have to get well. We have a bye week next weekend and then travel to the Paul Short Run, which is hosted by Lehigh so we will have to crank it up another notch."
Sophomore Steve Schroeder continues to shine for the Midshipmen, as he paced his team with a finishing time of 25:34 for a third-place finish. Schroeder was beat out for second place by a hair, as Iona's Kieran Clements nicked Schroeder at the tape.
Junior John Sweeney and sophomore Samuel Peckham placed ninth and 16th overall to round out the top-three finishers for the Midshipmen. As a whole, Navy placed third behind Iona and Yale with team total of 103.
Following Iona, Yale and Navy, St.. Joseph's and archrival Army rounded out the top five in that order with scores of 113 and 117, respectively.
Navy will be idle next weekend and get back to competition on Saturday, Oct. 5 at the Paul Short Run (11 a.m.) hosted by Lehigh.
