Navy Places Sixth at Roy Griak Invitational
FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. – The Navy men’s cross country team took on talented field of national opposition on Saturday and came away with a sixth-place result at the 32nd Annual Roy Griak Invitational. Racing on the 8k course at the Les Bolstad Golf Course, the Mids kept a tight pack and saw all five of its scoring runners finish within the top-45. Senior Josh Hanna (Winfield, Kan.) led Navy’s effort with a 15th-place effort and a time of 25:42.
Hanna and his teammate Kevin Murray (So., Wilmington, Del.) pushed each other down the stretch as Murray clocked in eight seconds behind at 25:50. Another pair of Midshipmen teammates came in back-to-back as Cory Donley (Sr., Salina, Kan.) and Jake Brophy (So., New Hope, Pa.) finished in 32nd and 33rd place, respectively with times of 26:11 and 26:16.
The fifth counter for Navy on Saturday was Jacob Shewbert (So., Flowery Branch, Ga.) who clocked in at 26:40, good for 45th place. The five Midshipmen, who counted came in within 58 seconds of each other, just two seconds more than the gap for the event champions, Colorado State.
The other four Mids, who ran as part of a 141-person field were Michael Karls (Jr., Festus, Mo.) and Quinn Schneider (Fr., Cornelius, N.C.), who clocked in at 26:57.3 and 27:33.1, respectively. Julian Perez (Fr., Beaumont, Texas) and Connor Nicholson (So., Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J.) completed the course at 27:46.6 and 27:52.6.
After the meet, head coach Al Cantello remarked that “we’re getting there as a team.”
In the overall standings, No. 18 Colorado State won with a team score of 47 points. No. 25 Michigan State was right behind with 55, while No. 22 UCLA tallied 63 points. R/V Minnesota, San Francisco and Navy all finished within nine points of each other as the host Golden Gophers notched 135 points, the Dons 140 and the Mids 144. Duke (196), South Dakota State (242), Drake (271) and Wyoming (286) rounded out the top-10.
Navy will be in action again next Friday morning, Sept. 29 at the Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, Pa. The racing for the Mids kicks off at 9:30 a.m.
