WEST POINT, N.Y. -
The Navy men's cross country team captured its third consecutive Star and 12th in the last 15 seasons as it defeated Army, 19-37, on a soggy Friday afternoon at the West Point Golf Course. Navy runners took the top-three places and five of the first seven spots to earn the win.
"We had a big hole to fill today when one of our top-five guys, Ken Bunnell, developed an injury," said Navy head coach Al Cantello, who won his 33rd-career Star Meet on Friday. "But, a couple guys - Dean Black and Robert Patterson - really stepped up and ran great."
Leading the way for Navy for the fifth consecutive race was senior Cody Rome. Rome set the pace as he was the first to cross the finish line in the 8k race with a time of 24:21.4. Fellow senior James Pearson followed closely behind in second place with a time of 24:25.2.
The times for both Rome and Pearson were their fastest of the season.
In replacing the injured Bunnell, Patterson picked the perfect time to produce his first top-five finish of the season, as he conquered the course in just 24:32, to take third place.
After a pair of Black Knights - Barrett LeHardy and Ricardo Galindo - took fourth and fifth place, respectively, Kyle Satterwhite (24:49.6) and Dean Black (24:53.2) followed to give the Mids five runners in the top seven.
"Taking the one through three spots was big," said Cantello. "But, the way certain guys stepped up, that was the key."
Jeremy Haney rounded out the top 10 as he finished with a time of 25:03.9.
Navy now owns a 46-28-1 (.620) all-time record against the Black Knights.
Navy will have next weekend off to prepare for the Patriot League Championship, which will be hosted by Lehigh on Oct. 29.
