Three Mids Named To Men’s Cross Country Patriot League Honor Roll

Eric Eckstrand leads the pack athletically and academically.

Center Valley, Pa. -- Three Navy men's cross country runners recorded 4.0 grade point averages in the fall semester to earn spots on the 2003 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, announced yesterday by Carolyn Schlie Femovich, Patriot League Executive Director.

Seventy-five student-athletes from the eight league schools earned the honor for men's cross country, with seven runners tabbing a perfect 4.0 GPA, including three Midshipmen.

Navy team captain Eric Eckstrand (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) led the Mids in the classroom as well as on the race course. Eckstrand, a computer science major, was named to the Patriot League Honor Roll and the Superintendent's List while helping the Mids to a second place finish at the League Championship as he earned First-Team All-League Honors with a third-place finish.

Senior Kurt Russell (Warren, Pa./Warren) and junior Barry Carmody (Elk Grove, Calif./Jesuit) were also tabbed to the Patriot League Honor Roll after completing the fall semester with perfect academic marks. Russell finished in the top-15 three times last season, including a 13th-place finish at the Great American Legends Race. Carmody earned a spot on the All-League First-Team with a 10th-place finish at the Patriot League Championship. Throughout the season, Carmody recorded four top-10 finishes and was the first Mid across the finish line two times. Both Russell and Carmody were named to the Superintendent's List.

To be eligible for the Honor Roll, a student-athlete must earn a 3.20 grade-point average in the fall semester and be awarded a varsity letter in one of the seven League-sponsored fall championship sports. A total of 534 student-athletes were named to the League's Fall Academic Honor Roll, which includes the sports of men's and women's cross country, field hockey, football, men's and women's soccer and volleyball.
